Each month we hold a general SWE meeting open to everyone. General members can also attend all our other events. It's a great way to get a glimpse into the programs we offer. Members with high attendance are invited to our semesterly banquets. Join at any time in the semester!

SWE officers lead and maintain the outreach, corporate, social, and marketing efforts of SWE. SWE officers meet biweekly, attend officer retreats and conferences, help run engineering events, and directly shape the future of SWE and SWE's efforts on inclusivivity within engineering.

Societal Committees


Officer: Swetha Ashok

The Advocacy Committee is dedicated to political engagement on the local and individual scale. Our focus this semester is to share resources centered around women and STEM policies, personal advocacy, environmental legislation, increasing the visibility of indigenous cultures, and much more! Under the advocacy committee, you will have the opportunity to hold events, learn about lobbying, and engage in both public and individual advocacy. Any expertise or passions are welcomed with open arms and will be channeled into a productive and fruitful semester!

The E&I committee is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusivity in engineering. As an E&I committee member, you will be an active contributor to the E&I working body to oversee UCB SWE initiatives, fostering a more equitable environment for engineers, specifically focusing on intersectionality and inclusion. By creating spaces for dialogue and action, this committee strives to empower underrepresented minorities in engineering and make Berkeley's engineering community more welcoming and diverse. Apply if you want to plan events on topics of your choosing that progress awareness for equity and inclusion!

The academic committee will work closely with faculty members, graduate students, and research representatives to plan and host events about academic experiences. As a committee member, you will help plan research talks, homework parties, professors' lunch, lab tours, graduate student coffee chats, and an end-of-the-semester research symposium. There will be plenty of opportunities to network with professors and graduate students from different engineering majors. Join the academic committee if you are interested in research opportunities, graduate school, networking, learning more about other engineering majors, and the great things people are achieving through research!

The Mentorship Committee members will assist the Mentorship Chair in the planning of the SWEster program by setting up mentor/mentee pairs, organizing social events, and creating a smaller community for SWE members. SWE offers three mentorship opportunities: the SWEster Program (pairing UC Berkeley members), GGS x SWE (pairing with industry members within SWE), and new to this semester, GWE x SWE (pairing with graduate women in engineering members).

As a Transfer Outreach committee member, you will be organizing events for transfer students at Berkeley, as well as connecting with community colleges to help prospective transfers with the application and transfer process. We'll be working internally on campus to make the transfer student experience more inclusive and supportive through events such as workshops and socials, as well as working to foster stronger connections between the transfer student community and the larger SWE community. No experience is required and you don't need to be a transfer student to apply - we are looking for individuals who will bring their unique and diverse ideas and perspectives!

Interested in design, art, and marketing? Join the Public Relations Committee to learn and develop your skills in Procreate, Canva, and Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Committee members will keep all SWE members informed about our events and opportunities, and help create and distribute weekly SWEmails, Facebook events and covers, promotional flyers, and design merchandise, such as stickers or tote bags. Members will also have the opportunity to expand their leadership by organizing design workshops! Anyone with a background or passion in art is encouraged to apply, but prior experience is not required.

Do you love content creation? Want to help spice up the SWE Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, or any of the other social media platforms? If so, the Social Media committee is just for you! You’ll help design marketing strategies that appeal to the online community while finding your creative outlook to make posts that highlight the best parts of SWE.

Want to apply your technical skills to real-world projects? Looking to gain hands-on experience working with a team and industry partners? Join the UC Berkeley SWE Project Team! We are a team of 10 engineers who work together each semester to complete a project for a real company. Our projects often involve both hardware and software, so we welcome students from all engineering backgrounds. This semester, we have partnered with Petoi, a robotics company that creates small-scale quadrupeds (think Boston Dynamics' dog robot—but smaller and more accessible). Our team will be working on adding new functionalities like voice command and navigation to these robots! Whether you're looking to gain experience, grow your network, or build something seriously cool, we'd love to have you on board.


Professional Committees

Shadow an Engineer is SWE's externship program that takes place over Winter Break and provides undergraduate engineering students an opportunity to experience what it is like to be a full-time engineer at a company. This semester, there will be 2 apprentice positions open for dedicated students who are interested in helping to put together our program by directly communicating with companies, working on student relations, and helping publicize the program. In addition, these apprentices would have the option to participate in an externship program, and they will also contribute to a blog post towards the end of the semester.

Evening with Industry is the largest engineering recruiting event hosted by SWE (Society of Women Engineers), which aims to connect students with representatives from companies of various STEM-related fields. The event consists of a virtual networking session from 5:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 8th, and an in-person networking dinner from 6:00-8:30 pm on Wednesday, October 9th. EWI is the perfect place to search for an internship or full-time job because it's centered around one on one student-representative interaction. It provides students with a chance to make an impression and get to know companies they envision themselves working for. Even if they aren't seeking an internship or job, EWI is an opportunity to explore their options and available opportunities and is open to all UC Berkeley students. Companies attending include Proctor and Gamble, Uber, PwC, Visa, and more to come!

The Professional Development Month Committee is a group responsible for developing the professional skills of students as well as connecting them to companies in the industry that teaches them these attributes. As a part of this committee, you will be a part of a team that hosts workshops with company representatives. You will also have the opportunity to learn about career development and networking skills. In the past, we have worked with companies such as Google, Stripe, Illumina, and more in creating events for the SWE community. In addition to working with these companies, you will also assist with planning non-corporate sponsored events aimed at fostering core professional development skills within the UC Berkeley community.

Mini University will be a one-day event designed to encourage high school students in underrepresented communities to pursue STEM majors and careers! Local students will be invited to the Berkeley campus and have the opportunity to learn what it's like to be a Berkeley Engineer. Participants will explore pathways in STEM through workshops led by on-campus organizations, labs, student panels, and professor talks! If you're interested in facilitating these types of events and connecting with underserved high school students, please consider applying to be on the Mini University Committee!

Join the SWENext committee to encourage female-identifying high school students to explore STEM! In addition to helping students establish SWENext clubs at their schools, we provide them with resources to assist them in navigating high school, college, and career planning. We also have a mentorship program that connects high-schoolers with undergraduate mentors at UC Berkeley to advise, support, and inspire them to pursue their interests in STEM. SWENext consists of the following subcommittees: Fundraising, Office Hours Panels, and SWENext Liaison. SWE Science is a free, monthly program geared towards teaching elementary students [Grades 4-5] the fundamentals of science and engineering through hands-on activities and experiments supplemented by presentations and workshops on scientific concepts. With this committee, you would have the opportunity to:

As a SWE Science committee member, you will have the opportunity to:
> Design and test lesson plans for both programs (meet weekly)
> Host and volunteer at the sessions (monthly)
> Interact with the students and assist them with their experiments
> Plan and create science kit activities to be used by 4th-8th grade students
> Gain important interpersonal and leadership skills! Some examples of previous experiments we have conducted are Marble Roller Coasters, Aerodynamic Models for Airplanes, Rubber-Band Powered Boat, Strawberry DNA Extraction, and Creating a Battery using Cents.

This semester we are hosting sessions at elementary schools monthly (most likely Thursdays/Fridays around 3:00-6:00pm). Being available at this time is not required and if you can’t make it you should still apply as these times are not finalized!

The High School Engineering Program aspires to foster a nurturing environment for female and nonbinary high school students to learn about and explore their interests in engineering. Our 10-week program takes place every Saturday, from 9 AM to 12 PM, from September 13th to November 15th, with one week of break in the middle (date TBD). Mentors will begin working with us around the 3-week mark (September 20th) and come in during sessions at the 5-week mark (October 11th) to help lead a technical project of their choice with a group of 4-6 high school students.

The technical project will be designed and facilitated by mentors, with the final few sessions of HSEP being dedicated to working on the project and preparing for the Final Showcase. This is a great chance for you to educate high school students on your field or academic interests. You'll be in charge of splitting up the work, guiding students through the process, and generally stepping into a mentor role. There are no creative limitations, and we will work with you to make sure your vision for the project can become a reality.

If you join our committee as a mentor, you will be able to:
> Design an educational project you're passionate about
> Mentor high school students on a personal level through a smaller group
> Gain leadership experience by guiding students through the project you designed

SWE++ is a 10-week program introducing Python programming to girls and nonbinary middle school students which will be hosted every Saturday morning from 10 am-12 pm (committee members will be expected to arrive by 9:45 am) in person at UC Berkeley campus starting from September 13th and ending on November 15th. As a committee member, you may be reaching out to other schools to help expand our program, help run logistics within the Berkeley program, teach the students, help plan our end-of-the-semester event, and much more! We'll also be having committee socials throughout the semester so if you're looking to get to know more fellow SWE members as well as gain leadership/teaching experience this is a committee for you!

Engineering Day is a Halloween-themed carnival-style event designed to encourage young elementary school children (K - 3rd grade) in the Bay Area to learn about STEM and participate in various themed booth activities. Our one-day program will take place on November 8th from 10 AM to 12 PM. Attendees will have the opportunity to complete hands-on STEM experiments, talk to “real” engineers, participate in lightning talks, and have fun with some arts and crafts!

There will be lots of creativity involved with making our activities as Halloween-themed as possible, so meetings will be filled with a lot of fun - I can just feel it in my bones (get it)! No previous outreach or STEM experience is needed, just enthusiasm for working with young children. Feel free to reach out with any questions!


Apprentices

Society and Alumni Relations plan events with other collegiate SWE sections, alumni, and professional sections. One to two apprentices will assist with event planning and communications. Please join if you would like to collaborate with students from other colleges or have any fun ideas for events involving alumni!

We’re building a publicly accessible alumni database to feature on the Berkeley SWE website! This database will serve as a valuable resource for current Berkeley students, enabling them to connect with alumni for advice, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

Does your team, startup, or company need talented interns, full-time students, or recent graduates to contribute to your projects or research? Have scholarship, apprenticeship, or externship opportunities? Are you looking for passionate individuals eager to learn and grow while helping you achieve your goals? Mock Interviews & Resume Reviews: Help students prepare for the job market by leading mock interviews or reviewing resumes.

Alumni Panels: Join themed discussions, such as "Women in Leadership," "Breaking Into Emerging Tech Fields," or "Navigating Early Career Challenges," etc, allowing students to learn and network!

The Intersocietal and Membership Committees work closely together planning events for the SWE community and collaborating with other engineering organizations. By joining these committees, you get to meet new people and host social events that include: breakfasts, destress events, holiday-related events, game nights, banquets, and many others. You also have the chance to create new events for our community and others to enjoy!







For Alumni


Our alumni go on to successful careers in all fields of engineering, and become role models and mentors for current undergraduate students. Alumni can stay in touch with UCB SWE through our alumni newsletter, our LinkedIn presence, and more. Alumni near Berkeley are also invited to the several alumni socials we hold each semester. In addition, many alumni choose to stay involved with the national Society of Women Engineers as professional members.

For a one-time $50 payment, collegiate members can secure a SWE membership for their collegiate years through the first year they qualify for professional grade membership.
Collegiate
SWE Membership is available for $20 to college students majoring in engineering and must be renewed annually to obtain membership benefits.
